Yussa's gaze cuts to the strange sphere hovering not far from him when a quiet chime emanates from it. It's small enough to fit in his palm, and at the moment it's glowing red with gold streaks flaring through it and fading. He sets down his pen and makes the somatic gesture for Sending.
"The rune on the door has changed - Wensforth will let you out shortly. I'm in my study, if that is the reason you're here."
He lets the spell go there, listening for a response as he picks up his pen again. The only reliable and safe way to enter his tower by teleportation is by using the circle, and there are a few he has given the secret to getting out of that room to and Ryn is one of them. This is the first time Yussa has really looked up in several hours and he notices the light in the room has changed - it's bright midafternoon, and he has been in his study since just after dawn. There is a pile of books he wishes to get through - figuring out how to unlock some of them as taken more time, others less. He's making notes about some of his findings now, recounting methods, successes, and failures. Now and then his hand drifts so that he can write questions in the margin, or passing thoughts that would interrupt the flow of the more analytic narrative he is writing.
On the side table nearby is a cup of tea; a pot is still on a tray on a larger table, and soon enough a second cup appears. That certainly confirms that he should be expecting company. Still, he doesn't stop writing even when the door opens, intent on finishing his thought before getting distracted by something - someone - else.
The response to Yussa's Sending is expeditious, though flippant. "Nah, just coming through Nicodranas to see the sights. Maybe eat some ceviche. I hear this time of year's great for sea bass."
Wensforth is apparently a goblin in a waistcoat. Dashing. Adorable. Remarkably expedient, considering this must be his...third month on the job? But Yussa wouldn't hire an idiot or a slouch, and he'd get rid of anyone who couldn't learn to be useful fast enough. If this guy's lasted this long, he's probably sticking around. So she makes nice while he lets her out and leads her downstairs, though when she introduces herself he seems to realize that she's no ordinary guest. There's a very short list of people with keys to the castle, so to speak, and she's on it. So with a promise that he'll send tea up, she's left to make her own merry way to the study, which is still where she left it last. That's not always the case, but it's been a while since Yussa rearranged the inside of the tower--the passcode for the teleportation chamber aside.
Ryn knocks before she lets herself in, because she can be polite. She does not wait to be invited before sprawling out on the chaise, because it'll snow in the Nine Hells before she bothers with fake formality, especially with an ex.
"About time you got a new assistant," she announces with a vague, sweeping gesture toward...wherever Wensforth went. "Not that your schedule's packed these days, but at least you'll have somebody to remind you about the little work-study date you set up months ago with an old friend of yours on a specific day at a specific time." Her tone is light, even humorous. She's not pissed that he forgot, because he's the one who needed her, and it's not like she has anywhere else to be today. But he does deserve a little snark. "Plus, goblin in a waistcoat? Never not cute."
Tilting her head toward the desk, she finally takes a proper look at Yussa. As always, he's exactly the damn same as when they met twenty years ago. Elves. Still hot, though, which makes him one of the few stagnant things she actually finds worth looking at.
"I assume you picked today because of the..." Pointing a single finger up at the ceiling, clicking her tongue. "Semi-annual nexus over our heads currently. So whatcha got for me?"
"It seems he still needs training, considering that he didn't remind me." Wensforth has been nothing but diligent so far, so Yussa can forgive this one slip-up, especially since he imagines the goblin is currently sweating about it now that Ryn has arrived. "And you know I keep certain standards for my assistants."
Wensforth's clothes are a matter of necessity, though the goblin did arrive with several well-made outfits after he was hired. Yussa was impressed enough to simply give Wensforth an additional allowance for his wardrobe. He trusts the goblin's taste enough to leave it at that.
Yussa finishes his notation and sets his journal and pen aside. The page flashes and he rises smoothly from his seat. Given the way he's dressed, he was expecting company, so perhaps he remembered after all (and promptly forgot again while working). While he might not have aged, Ryn hasn't changed in her own ways. His admiration is subtle, but not hidden as he properly takes in the sight of his guest.
"It's good to see you too, Ryn. The nexus currently above my tower is... hm. Well, come here." He gestures to his colleague and leaves his study to head up toward the top of the tower. The telescope there has been modified by himself and Ryn over the years and he invites her to look through it now.
It's pointed straight above them to where a few leylines intersect. Yussa checked it multiple times this morning to make sure the phenomena hadn't changed at all. Through the lens the leylines appear more obvious, one of the enchantments being a way to enhance spotting them. But at the very center of their meetings there seems to be... a shadow of a night sky. It isn't visible without the lens.
"It isn't a rift, but neither do I think it's properly an... echo, either. I believe that is the Astral Plane we are seeing."
The veil between planes is thin at such points, especially when there are multiple lines converging. Yussa thinks they are near enough to the holiday marked in Tal'Dorei as Winter's Crest that it may be thinner yet.
